# The Elements of Restaurant Design

 # Introduction

Indoor waterfalls, warm earth tones, whimsical takleware, oversized furniture, ecletic art objects today‘s restaurant often look like modern art museums rather than dining facilities, a fact that sometimes generates more comments about their decor rather than their menus.  Consumers now expect an entertaining atmosphere to enhance their dining experience and the designers must cater to this desire with innovative and exciting designs.

 # Creating the right look

―You need to have a vision of what you want to create and not get off the path you have set for yourself‖ says Lukes, a famous US, restaurant & bar designer.  For this you need to know what the restaurant owner wants his patrons to experience.  Ofcourse the designers should consider the flow of space, lighting and materials, tables and upholstery so that everything works together as a part of a large narrative...Think of it as creating a theatre experience.
Let us take into consideration the various elements of restaurant & bar design which when integrated in right proportion and style create a setting with good taste.
Following are the elements of restaurant and bar design.
a)  Space
b) Spatial Organisation
c)  Restaurant & Bar Layout
d) Lighting
e)  Menu cards & Other Graphics

 #  Space

“The act of dining, winning and socialising is becoming a holistic experience so designers must approach these establishments in the same right if they are to win customers hearts”. A restaurant can and has been likened to a store.  For after all, restaurants of all types and subtypes are strictly in the business of merchandising food.  But the restaurant can be equally well regarded as a theatre.  The decor is the stage set; the waiters, waiteresses, and sometimes the Chef, are the actors and actreseses; the guests are the audience. It is for them that the continuous play comes into full swing.

  #  The Restaurant General Plan

Every restaurant operation is of course unique, even among chains, in that it follows to some extent its own methods and notions in catering to a predominant client type, existing for a particular location.  However it may be said that all restaurants are subject to a general plan, almost always involving consideration of the following basic elements : entrance areas, dining areas, kitchen areas and frequently bars and cocktail lounges.

# Creating the right look

Each of the areas or spaces mentioned above need to be handled carefully to create just the right
setting with good taste. According to Lukez, a famous US restaurant and bar designer, ―You
need to have a vision of what you want to create and not get off the path you have set for
yourself‖. For this you need to understand that with the restaurant industry growing at a
competitive rate, consumers are not just looking for a good menu but the consumers nowadays
expect an entertaining atmosphere to enhance their dining experience. The designers must cater
to that desire with innovative and exciting designs.
While designing a restaurant the designer should consider the flow of space, lighting and
materials, tables etc so that everything works together as a part of large narrative...Think of it as
creating a threatre experience. Indoor waterfalls, warm earth tones, whimsical tableware,
oversized furniture – today‘s restaurants often look like modern art museums rather than dining
facilities, a fact that sometimes generates more comments about their decor rather than their
menus. So today‘s designers must keep themselves updated about whats in and what‘s out,
whats trendy and what can become a trend and ofcourse what kind of experience the patrons
must be given when they enter the space and during their short stay inside.
A successful restaurant, cafe or food establishment needs a well defined concept. For a
space to be arresting, the concept must include every aspect of the operation, from the food to the
interior design table top design and service standards - right down to the napkins - to offer
customers a complete and satisfying experience.

#  Spatial Organisation

If one visualises restaurant as a series of concentric circles, then central circle will be the
kitchen, the surrounding one the dining room, the third one the bars, lounges, waiting rooms and

other public services and the last one the exterior, parking and landscaping.
